Karai
香辣居
Explore Karai in Koto Ward's Ojima for signature mapo tofu noodles seasoned with Sichuan doubanjiang, chewy pan-fried gyoza, and wok-tossed fried rice, ideal for solo diners from lunch until late into the night.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
When craving serious chili heat, the first bowl to consider at Karai is the signature Mapo Tofu Noodles. Ladled with a rich sauce that layers the deep umami of Sichuan doubanjiang aged for over 5 years with the tongue-tingling punch of Sichuan pepper, the dish delivers heavy savoury depth alongside the silky texture of fresh tofu. Diners can select their preferred noodle style, from thick, unevenly shaved knife-cut noodles that catch the starchy sauce to curly thin noodles, and request their preferred level of spiciness.
The broader noodle lineup includes Dan Dan Noodles blending nutty sesame paste with homemade chili oil and sweet cabbage, as well as piping-hot Hot and Sour Noodles that balance vinegar tang and heat. Handcrafted pan-fried gyoza with thick, chewy wrappers stuffed with pork and Chinese chives make a natural companion to the soups. Packed with savory juices, they hold up well without dipping sauce, and pair equally nicely with fluffy egg and chashu fried rice tossed in the wok to order.
A counter line runs inside the shop, creating an easygoing atmosphere for solo visitors looking to eat without delay. Operating through the midday lunch hour and remaining open until 24:00 late at night from Monday through Saturday, the shop is equally handy for late dinners or a quiet bite after work. Payment is accepted exclusively in cash.
